MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WORKSHOP, BESPOKE ORGANISATIONAL MENTAL HEALTH RISK MANAGEMENT AND STAFF  WELLBEING POLICY & STRATEGY DEVELOPMENT

Organisations are struggling with overworked employees, with many having to adjust to a return to work settings, dealing with financial pressures, and understanding that well-being is crucial for creating vibrant communities and keeping motivated, healthy employees.

Before the pandemic, research showed that investing in staff mental health correlated positively with productivity and workplace performance.  This could not be highlighted any more straightforward than a study posted by Deloitte, whereby it was suggested that for every 1£ spent on employee mental health, there was a 5£ return in reduced absence, presenteeism and staff turnover.

1

Organisational Mental Health Risk Management

As a result of the global pandemic, there has been a big shift toward the mental health well-being of individuals both in personal and work-based settings.  Circumstances have aligned in that individuals are far more aware and more accepting of mental health-related issues; there is growth in studies and evidence for mental health-related issues within the humanitarian sector, and organisations demonstrate a willingness to support staff through key mental health intervention.  Such alignment provides an ideal situation whereby the humanitarian sector can reflect and reverse the longstanding reactive model for addressing the mental health of HAWs.

2

Mental Health Awareness Training for all staff levels and Pre/Post Deployment Counselling

As the demand for humanitarian aid grows in high-risk environments, so too does the need to prioritize the mental well-being of humanitarian aid workers (HAWs). These dedicated individuals face constant exposure to critical incidents and traumatic stress, putting their mental health at significant risk.  By raising awareness about humanitarian mental health and reducing stigma, organizations can create a supportive environment where HAWs feel empowered to seek help. Research shows that HAWs are more susceptible to negative mental health outcomes compared to the general population. This can manifest in decreased work efficiency, poor decision-making in the field, and ultimately, high staff turnover. Investing in the mental health of your workforce is not just the right thing to do, it's a smart one. By promoting staff well-being, organizations can improve productivity, reduce attrition rates, and ensure a more effective and sustainable humanitarian response.

3

Mental Health Policy and Processes

Expert consultation is available for developing, refining, and aligning mental health policies within humanitarian organizations according to the latest standards and recommendations from the Joint Inspection Unit's Review of Mental Health and Well-being policies and practices in United Nations system organizations. Well-established mental health policies ensure that mental health processes in humanitarian organizations reflect best practices, promote employee well-being, and cultivate a supportive work environment. This, in turn, enhances the mental health and psychosocial support available to humanitarian aid workers (HAWs).
